finish the Google AI Professional Certificate in four weeks by doing three things. Fix one evening a week as your anchor session and write a deadline for every two courses. Name a check-in buddy who will text you if you go quiet. Put the two longest stretches, Course 1 and Courses 7 and 8, on your calendar before you start. Total course time is about 13 hours by Coursera's own estimates, so expect 2 to 4 hours a week.
Outcome, time and what you need
Outcome: the certificate earned in 28 days, or a dated plan for the last course.
Time: about 13 hours over four weeks. Coursera's program page headlines "8 hours," but its per-course estimates are 3, 1, 1, 1, 2, 1, 2 and 2 hours. Plan for 13. For the full breakdown, read 8 Hours or 13?.
Prerequisites:
- An active enrollment. In Massachusetts, residents get free access until 31 December 2027 through the Massachusetts AI Hub.
- A laptop or tablet with a keyboard for most sessions.
- One person willing to be your buddy for four weeks.
- A paper calendar, or the calendar on your phone.
Use this plan if, do not use it if
Use it if:
- You work, care for family, or both, and have 2 to 4 hours a week.
- You started the course and stalled, or you enrolled and never began.
Do not use it if:
- You can clear a whole weekend. Then do Courses 1 to 4 on day one and use this plan for the rest.
- You are not sure you want the certificate yet. Decide that first. A plan cannot fix a goal you do not hold.
Why this shape works better than "self-paced"
Self-paced courses with no stakes finish in very low numbers. In edX courses from Harvard and MIT, "3.13 percent completed their courses in 2017-18," while 46% of paying "verified" learners finished, as Inside Higher Ed reported. Paying learners also chose to pay, so the gap is not all down to stakes. It still shows how far commitment moves the number.
Planning prompts alone are weak. A study of about 250,000 learners in 247 courses found that prompts to plan raised engagement early, "but the impact dwindled as the course progressed," per the Cornell Chronicle. That is why this plan pairs the calendar with a real person who checks on you.
Programs that do help people finish use dated schedules. The Jobs for the Future field guide advises programs to "create a pacing calendar outlining the time to complete the program."
Before day one: set up in 20 minutes
- Log in once now. Open Course 1. Confirm you can see the first video. If you cannot: fix the login tonight. Do not let a password reset eat your first anchor evening.
- Pick your anchor evening. Same day, same time, all four weeks. Write it in pen.
- Pick your short-session slots. 30 minutes each: five in Weeks 1 and 4, two or three in Weeks 2 and 3. A lunch break works.
- Ask your buddy. Use the agreement below.
- Write the four deadlines from the calendar onto your own calendar, with real dates.
Check: you have four anchor evenings dated and a buddy who said yes. Do not start until both are true.
The four-week calendar
Minutes are planning targets built from Coursera's estimates. Adjust the short sessions, never the deadlines.
WEEK COURSES EST. ANCHOR EVENING SHORT SESSIONS DEADLINE
1 1 AI Fundamentals 3 h 90 min 5 x 30 min End of week 1:
2 AI for Brainstorming and Planning 1 h Courses 1-2 done
2 3 AI for Research and Insights 1 h 60 min 2 x 30 min End of week 2:
4 AI for Writing and Communicating 1 h Courses 3-4 done
3 5 AI for Content Creation 2 h 90 min 3 x 30 min End of week 3:

4 7 AI for App Building 2 h 90 min 5 x 30 min End of week 4:
8 AI for App Deployment 2 h Certificate earned

13 hStall warnings:
- Week 1 is the heaviest. Course 1 alone is estimated at 3 hours. Split it across your anchor evening and two short sessions. Do not try it in one sitting.
- Week 2 is the lightest. Use any spare time to start Course 5.
- Week 4 is the second heaviest. App building and deployment are new tasks for most people. Protect this week from other commitments now.
- Videos must play to the end to count as complete, according to a MassLive column syndicated by AOL. Skimming will not save time.
Your check-in buddy agreement
A buddy is not a cheerleader. A buddy is the person who notices silence. Print this, fill it in and send a photo of it to each other.
CHECK-IN BUDDY AGREEMENT
Learner: ______________________ Buddy: ______________________
1. My anchor evening is ____________ at ______.
2. After each anchor evening, I text my buddy one line:
"Done: Course __. Next: Course __."
3. If my buddy has not heard from me by ____________ (2 days after my
anchor evening), they text me one question:
"What got in the way?"
4. My buddy does not lecture, remind me of deadlines, or ask if I
still want to do this.
5. If I miss two anchor evenings in a row, we talk by phone for
10 minutes and pick a new date for the course I am on.
6. This agreement ends on ____________ (day 28), or when I finish.
Signed: ____________ ____________ Date: ________Your buddy does not need to take the course. If they are taking it too, swap roles.
Failure modes and exact fixes
1. You missed an anchor evening. Fix: do not wait a week. Hold a 30-minute session within 2 days on the same course. Text your buddy that you did. Keep the end-of-week deadline.
2. You are a full week behind. Fix: do not restart and do not reschedule the whole plan. Move the missed courses into the next week's short sessions. Add one extra 30-minute session. If you are two weeks behind, push the final deadline by one week, once.
3. An exercise has you stuck. Fix: write down the exact screen and step. Spend no more than 20 minutes on it. Then skip to the next video, and bring the problem to someone: a career counselor, a library help desk, or your buddy. Do not let one exercise end the course.
4. Something outside the course takes over. Illness, a new shift, a family emergency. Fix: tell your buddy and pause the plan with a restart date. Free access in Massachusetts runs to 31 December 2027. A pause with a date is not quitting.
5. The AI tool gives you a confident wrong answer. Fix: good. Note it. Checking AI output is part of the skill. Kirsner reported an AI admitting it had "generated illustrative data and realistic-sounding citation titles."
Phone or laptop?
Use a phone for videos and reading on short sessions. Use a laptop or tablet with a keyboard for exercises, especially in Weeks 3 and 4. If you have only a phone, ask a public library or career center about computer access before Week 3.
Track your progress privately
Tick off each course as you finish it on the ed.cafe Start page. The checklist saves only in your own browser, with no login and no tracking.
Final check on day 28: Coursera shows all eight courses complete, or you hold a written date for the last one, agreed with your buddy.
This is version 1 of the plan. ed.cafe has not yet run it with a cohort; it will be revised after Circle #1 with real timings.
